Called to the Bar in 1994, Karen Maki brings to our legal team a wide range of litigation experience and has appeared many times before the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal. Karen practices in the areas of commercial litigation, estate litigation, personal injury (ICBC), and pet law, including veterinary negligence and animal custody conflicts.

Karen has represented clients in complex commercial litigation files involving shareholder disputes, real estate disputes, insurance issues, strata property disputes, easements, breaches of contracts and loans/guarantees. Karen has also been counsel on estate litigation files involving competency issues, validity of marriages and division of estate funds. She has represented clients on personal injury files involving significant damages for pain and suffering, wage loss and loss of earning capacity. Karen has worked with numerous clients with extensive injuries, including traumatic brain injuries and permanent physical disabilities, as well as clients with minor soft tissue injuries.

Karen has been a member of two important committees of the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch. As a member of the Judicial Advisory Committee, Karen helped the Judicial Council of BC assess applicants applying to become judges of the Provincial Court, and as a member of the Court Services Committee, Karen worked with other members to advise and make recommendations regarding the provisions of court services throughout the Province.

In her leisure time, Karen diligently practices the art of dressage with her warmblood horse, Kayla, and looks after her many cats. She also enjoys travelling and has been riding in Iceland and hiking in Peru.
